First Actuary is run by locally resident actuary David Holmes. David trained as an actuary in Scotland and Guernsey and became a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in 2004. David has lived in the Channel Islands since 2003 and has provided a range of actuarial consulting services covering the areas of pensions, investment, life insurance and captive insurance. David specialises in the provision of pension and investment advice to employers and trustees of a range of pension schemes.
David has a wealth of experience in delivering actuarial services in the Channel Islands. Prior to establishing First Actuary, David worked for a Guernsey based firm of consulting actuaries, where he was responsible for business development and leading the delivery of pension and investment consulting services in Jersey.
David studied Actuarial Mathematics at university and worked for Standard Life in Edinburgh before moving to Guernsey with his family in 2003.
In 2004 he completed his actuarial qualification to become a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries while working for a large European insurance company, where he gained expertise in both life and non-life insurance. David then joined Guernsey consultants BWCI where he worked initially as an investment consultant, advising pension, corporate and charity clients.
In 2008 David took a year out to travel with his family, before relocating to Jersey with BWCI. David led business development and the delivery of pension and investment consulting services in the island until the end of 2011.
David established First Actuary in 2012 to provide a responsive and tailored service to clients seeking high value actuarial solutions in Jersey.
In addition to traditional actuarial work in pensions and insurance, David has expertise in the audit, development and improvement of calculation processes. In particular David promotes greater automation and a more robust approach to custom applications in commonly used software including Excel, Access and VBA.
